Dec. 11, Letter to Sister Eliza

Dearest Sister, I arrived safely at Herald House. Much has changed here since the premature passing of Cousin Roland. Oh, the house is the same grand mansion as ever, but Rosemary has the appearance of a tedious and exhausted fishwife. Sadly, I am not sure what I can do to assist here. Roland’s father, the kind and generous Mr. Willoby, has handled all the details of the estate management, but dear Cousin Rosemary seems much at odds about this.    As an outsider, I feel the need to understand the situation before I offer assistance. In that vein, I am hoping that my stay here does not extend much past the New Year. The grounds are beautiful with a light covering of snow this morning but I miss the comfort of Maple Lane and the life I have there.

Your hopeful sister, Lucy.
